I’m in the midst of changing the distribution of my books. Instead of using Smashwords to deliver my books to Apple and Kobo, I’m uploading them directly to those stores. That means I’ll have better control over pricing – being able to set it by territory, for example – faster uploads and changes, and also more timely reporting. The only downside is that the books will lose their existing reviews. 😦 On both of these portals, reviews don’t transfer between editions of a book.
Some of my books have a lot of reviews (especially at Apple). I find reviews helpful when I’m trying to decide what to read next. So, my compromise is to publish the new editions through both portals but leave the old editions there for a while. I’m hoping that you (and others) will leave reviews on the new editions.
How will you know the difference between old and new editions? Well, you could look at the publisher name. The new editions will be published by Circe Books. (That’s me!) I’m also updating the links here on the site as the new editions go live. Or you could look at the price. The new editions are cheaper than the ones that will be going away.
I’ve uploaded everything directly to B&N today and the books are now available for sale on their site. Right now, there are two copies of everything (except SWITCH) displayed, because the editions coming from Smashwords have yet to be removed. This should get resolved in the next week or so. (And it doesn’t matter which you buy – I’ll get paid either way!)
What will happen, though, is that all the reviews and ratings posted on the older editions will disappear along with them. So, if you have previously posted a review or rating at B&N for one of my books, or you’d like to do so now, I’d really appreciate it.
This is one of those mildly painful things that will make everything easier in the long run. You saw how quickly SWITCH was available at B&N – in future, all new books will be published there that way.
The B&N links on the pages on the tab (The Plume, The Wedding, Anthologies) are all to the new editions. You can tell which ones they are, as well, because they have no ratings or reviews, and right now, they have no cover images. That’ll probably change tonight. They also don’t have Smashwords listed as the publisher.
While I was sick, I uploaded all of my books directly to KOBO – that’s the kind of job that doesn’t take a lot of energy or concentration. They’re all there now, BUT the ratings and reviews have disappeared.
I’ve added the new tracking numbers to Goodreads, as this should help the Goodreads reviews to appear on the KOBO site. But KOBO tells me that there need to be reviews and ratings on the KOBO site to prompt the feed from Goodreads.
This is where you come in. 🙂 If you’ve bought one of my books from KOBO, could you please review it on their site and rate it? Also, if you did that before, it will be gone – the directly uploaded book appears as a new book, and the data from the older version is lost – so I’d appreciate if you could do it again.
All Ella titles on KOBO are in this listing right here.
Thank you! This is a bit painful, but it means that new books will be available more quickly to you KOBO shoppers, and also that I’ll have more control over the pricing etc., on the books.
I’ve just discovered that I can upload directly to Barnes and Noble as well (YAY!) so next week, you Nook users will have the same request from me.
Now, back to finishing SWITCH…
Now I am on Goodreads, and my books are listed there.
You can find me right here.
Another job done, so I can get back to writing!
